Braintree – Herbert J. Collins, age 85, entered into eternal life on October 15, 2017. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Herb was born and raised in Dorchester and has lived in Braintree for 50 years.  He graduated from Boston College High School and Bentley College.  Mr. Collins was Chief Executive Officer of Harvard University Employees Credit Union. Herb was a life member of Braintree Rifle and Pistol Club, held various leadership roles  for Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 11 and 111 , he is a former Commissioner of Pond Meadow Park and former President of Harvard University Retirees Association. Herb was a 50-year parishioner of Sacred Heart Church. He is the beloved husband of 61 years to Claire (Murphy) Collins; the devoted father of Herbert R. Collins and his wife Sandra McArthur of Clinton, Anne M. Parker and her husband William of Franklin, John M. Collins of Hingham, and George R. Collins and his wife Elaine of Braintree. He is the beloved brother of the late Bertha Toomey. He is lovingly referred to as Grampy to Carolyn, Brad, Michael, Patrick, Christine and Suzanne. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit on Tuesday from 2-4 pm and 6-8:30 pm. Funeral from the Clancy-Lucid Funeral Home, 100 Washington St. Weymouth Landing on Wednesday October 18 at 9 am.  Funeral Mass  at Saint Thomas More Church, Braintree  at 10 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be immediately afterword at Plain St. Cemetery, Braintree.

    Herb hired me in 1984 as Collection Manager at the credit union, where I worked for 25 years. Herb was a wonderful man and it was always a pleasure to work for him. My deepest sympathy to the family.
